History

The creator of the museum and its main curator until the end of his life was the Minusinsk pharmacist (head of a private pharmacy), a passionate collector and collector N.M. Martyanov (1844-1904), who settled in Minusinsk in 1874.

Initially, the museum was located in the house of the mayor G.I. Gusev (49 Oborony str.). In 1878, by decision of the City Duma, a local public library was opened at the museum. The Duma allocated 200 rubles in silver for its maintenance.

Since its inception, the museum itself has existed exclusively on public donations, 75% of which were contributions from ordinary citizens and surrounding peasants. In 1900 alone, 1,500 rubles were received from the treasury. For almost 30 years, N. M. Martyanov headed the museum on a voluntary basis. But it was necessary to support a family, and therefore he was forced to serve as a pharmacist.

In 1879, a building was allocated for the museum on Cathedral Square of Minusinsk , but it did not meet the needs of the museum. Therefore, it was decided to build a special building. The project was developed by the Irkutsk architect Rassushin with the assistance of a political exile, a museum employee A.O. Lukoshevich. The construction of the new museum building began in May 1887 . In 1890, the construction of the museum was completed.

In 1885, the number of visitors to the Museum reached 8 thousand people, moreover, the majority were peasants.

The museum's collections were awarded at Russian and foreign exhibitions - Florence (1885), the Siberian-Ural Exhibition in Yekaterinburg (1887), the All-Russian Industrial Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod (1896), the World Exhibition in Chicago (1893) and the World Exhibition in 1900 in Paris . The charter of the Minusinsk Museum, authored by N. M. Martyanov, was the basis for the charters of many Siberian museums.

December 13, 1904 , on the day of Martyanov’s death, the City Duma decided to name the museum and the street on which Nikolai Mikhailovich lived.

Between the old and new buildings of the museum there is a bust to its founder, the work of the sculptor G. D. Lavrov.
