History
The company was founded by J. Northrop in Hawthorne , California , in 1939. It became the third aircraft manufacturing company founded by Northrop. The company gained fame for its “ flying wings ” projects (of which, despite a number of prototypes that passed flight tests, only the B-2 Spirit bomber was launched into mass production), as well as the creation of the heavy night fighter P-61 Black Widow (1942 g.).
After losing Lockheed Martin in the fight for the contract under the Advanced Tactical Fighter program and rejecting the application for participation in the Joint Strike Fighter program, the company was forced to unite with Grumman Corporation and form Northrop Grumman .
