In the armed forces of Italy, there are two units, which can be called "Marine Corps". First of all, it is the Marine Corps itself ( Italian: Fucilieri di Marina ), which is part of the Italian Navy and performs all the functions inherent in the Marine Corps (sea landing, capturing and holding the enemy’s coast, guarding its own naval bases). Along with the Maritime Fusiliers, the Italian armed forces have at their disposal a “Jellied” or “Lagoon” regiment ( Italian: Reggimenti Lagunari ), which has the same equipment and weapons as the Italian marines, uses the same tactics and (with the support of aviation and naval artillery) can solve the same problems as the Italian marines, although it is part of the ground forces .

Airborne Forces
The landing forces of the Italian fleet ( Italian: La Forza da Sbarco ) have a long tradition. The first division of this kind was created at the beginning of the XVIII century, at a time when Italy did not yet exist as a single state. Since then, the Marine Corps took part in almost every conflict in which Italy was involved, including the First World War , during which the compound received the honorary name "San Marco" (from Italian. - "St. Mark"), to commemorate the defense Marines of the city of Venice [2] .
During World War II , Marines from the St. Mark’s division bravely fought on all fronts, wherever they were sent — from the Balkans to North Africa . After the signing of the armistice in 1943, the naval infantry of the Royal Italian Navy was divided into two parts between the warring parties. In the South (which the Allies controlled at that time) and the North, where the 10th Flotilla MAS was operating, and the Marines from its composition took part in the battles against the Allied forces on the side of the Italian Social Republic (RSI).
In post-war Italy, the Marines were recreated as the “Saint Mark's Battalion” in the early 60s. Since then, this unit has been participating in peacekeeping missions and has been involved in almost all operations (Lebanon in the early 80s, the Persian Gulf in the 1987-91s, Somalia in 1991.92 and 95, Albania, Kosovo, East Timor and Iraq in 2003, etc.) in which Italy took part.
Today, the "Airborne Forces" of the fleet number 2,400 Marines, well trained and recruited only on a voluntary basis (by contract). The most trained units of the Marine Corps are part of the Italian Rapid Reaction Force, and can be deployed overseas in amphibious amphibious or conventional operations as soon as possible. The compound is based in Brindisi.
History
In 1713, the Sicilian King Vittorio Amedeo II establishes the "Marine" Regiment (Reggimento "La Marina"), composed of sailors of the Marine Squadron. In subsequent years, this unit will be called the "Naval Brigade", which will take part in the first War of Independence of Italy .
The modern Mechanized Amphibious Infantry, founded in 1951, continues the traditions of the Worldly Infantry of the Calm Republic of Venice.
