Niau ( French Niau ) - an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago ( French Polynesia ). Translated from the Tahitian language, the name of the atoll means "coconut palm . " Located in the western part of the archipelago 53 km west of the atoll of Fakarava.

Geography
The atoll is relatively small, has an oval shape with a diameter of 8 km. The total land area is about 20 km². In the center of Niau there is a 32 km² lagoon , which is completely isolated from land by ocean water (therefore, the water in the lagoon is very salty). The soil on the island is very fertile.
History
Niau was discovered in 1820 by the Russian traveler Thaddeus Faddeevich Bellingshausen , who named it the island of Greig .
Administrative Division
Administratively part of the commune Fakarava .
Population
In 2012, the population of Niau was 226 people. The main settlement of the atoll is the village of Tupuna .
