Tobruk [1] ( Arabic: طبرق ) is a city in Libya , the municipality of El Butnan . The population is 120 thousand inhabitants (2011).

Located in the historical region of Cyrenaica in the east of the country, 120 km from the border with Egypt . Port on the Mediterranean coast . History
On the site of the modern city was the ancient Greek colony Antipyrgus.
From January 1941 to November 1942 there were fierce battles between the countries of the Anti-Hitler coalition and the Axis countries (as part of the African Corps compound) during the Second World War . In this regard, the small concrete bunker “ Tobruk ” was named after the city.
In 1951-1969, the residence of the King of Libya, Idris I.
After the outbreak of the civil war and the collapse of Libya into the warring parties, since 2014 the city has had an elected parliament - the House of Representatives , expelled from the capital by Islamists [2] . In this regard, the city is de facto considered the capital of the eastern part of Libya, which does not obey the government in Tripoli.
