Parliament of vanuatu

The Vanuatu Parliament ( National Assembly ) is the legislative body of the country. Vanuatu is a parliamentary republic, so the role of parliament is great, it elects a prime minister, and also makes up the bulk of the electoral college, which elects a president for a term of 5 years. The parliament is unicameral, currently consists of 52 people. Elected for 4 years by universal suffrage in single-member districts. Since 1991, not a single party has been gaining an absolute majority of votes sufficient to form a government; therefore, parties create coalitions. More and more parties take place with every parliamentary election: from 2 in 1979 to 10 in 2004 . The last elections were held on July 6, 2004 .
