The match for the World Chess Championship was held from September 3 to November 9, 1985 in Moscow in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall .
After the match between Karpov and Kasparov 1984-1985 was interrupted after 48 games without declaring a winner, the new match was played according to the new rules: up to 6 victories, but not more than 24 games. The champion’s right to a rematch in the event of a defeat was canceled, but taking into account that the champion had such a right in the previous match, an exception was made only for this match. In addition, the three-year match cycle was replaced by a two-year one.
The main referees are Andrey Malchev (Bulgaria) and Vladas Mikenas (USSR).
Having won with a score of +5 −3 = 16, Garry Kasparov became the 13th world chess champion. In 1986, Karpov took advantage of the right to a rematch .
