History
It was founded in 1880 on the Missouri River in front of the fortified Fir Pierre fur traders camp. It is the administrative center of the state since November 11, 1889 . The city is named after the French-born fur trader Pierre Shuto, whose name the locals (mainly from Germany and Scandinavia) pronounced as Pierre.
Geography and climate
Pierre lies on the hilly banks of the Missouri River , a few kilometers from one of the largest man-made lakes in the world - the Oaxe Reservoir.
The climate of the city is moderately continental , rather dry. Winters are long, cold and not very snowy, summers are hot and relatively rainy.

Population
According to the 2010 census, there were 13,646 people in Pyrrhus, 5,778 households, and 3,463 families. The average population density was 403.4 people per square kilometer. There were 6159 housing units.

The average age of citizens was 39.3 years. 22.9% of residents were under the age of 18, 7.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24, 26.7% were between 25 and 44 years old, 28.9% were between 45 and 64 years old, and 13.9% - at the age of 65 years and older. 47.8% of men and 52.2% of women lived in the city.
The average annual per capita income in 2000 was $ 20,462. The crime rate is 2.1 times lower than the US average.
Economics and Transport
The main employers in the city are various government agencies, which is associated with the status of Pyrrhus as the capital of South Dakota . Tourism plays a significant role in the economy of Pyrrhus (up to 1.5 million people visit the nearby Lake Oaxe annually).
Six kilometers east of the city there is a small (about 15 thousand passengers a year) Pierre Regional Airport ( IATA : PIR , ICAO : KPIR ), connecting Pierre with Denver and Minneapolis . The city has a railway, but passenger traffic is not available. Pierre is one of the four state capitals (along with Dover , Jefferson and Juneau ), through which there is no interstate highway . The closest of them ( I-90 ) runs 50 kilometers south of the city. There is no intercity public transport in Pierre.
