Biography
Born in Bergamo. The son of the artist Domenico Gislandi, received his first skills from his father. From 1675 he studied in Venice , where he studied the art of Titian and Veronese . Initially, he worked in the workshop of Giacomo Cotta, then Bartolomeo Bianchi and, finally, in the workshop of Sebastiano Bombelli in Venice in the 1690s. In 1702 he entered the Order of the Minims , close in spirituality to the Franciscans . He also worked in Milan and Bologna , where he became close to Giuseppe Maria Crespi and in 1717 was elected a member of the Clementine Academy. He also studied with the German portrait painter Salomon Adler in Milan. The last years of his life he spent in the monastery of Galgario in Bergamo, for which he received his nickname.
Creativity
Art historians note in his work the influence of Rembrandt and find a parallel to his portraits in the painting of Hogarth .
Legacy
Gislandi's works are presented in the Louvre , the Hermitage , the National Art Gallery of Washington , the Royal Museum in Amsterdam , the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and other major museums of the world, in private collections.
