Riots in Cincinnati (2001)

Mass riots in Cincinnati occurred in April 2001 in connection with the killing of a 19-year-old African American by a white police officer.

On Saturday evening, April 7, 2001, 19-year-old offender Timothy Thomas was killed while trying to escape from the police. Since Monday, the unrest began in the blacks. On Tuesday, the market was set on fire in the historic center of the city. Groups of protesting citizens marched through the streets of the city, setting up pogroms in shops and offices. The police took over the defenses in the city administration building, using tear gas and plastic bullets. The media reported cases of violence against the white population by the protesters.

On Wednesday, one of the policemen was shot. On the same day, according to the BBC , the protesters stopped the car, where the white woman was, having committed violent acts. The woman was rescued by passersby.

The mayor of the city said that he was ready to call the forces of the National Guard . US President George W. Bush urged residents to order. On April 12, a state of emergency was declared in the city and a curfew was imposed, after which the riots subsided.

As a result of the riots, more than 60 people were injured.
