Cunard, Samuel

Samuel Cunard ( born Sir Samuel Cunard ; November 21, 1787 ; Halifax - April 28, 1865 , London ) is one of the largest shipowners of the 19th century.

The son of a Canadian logger Abraham Kunard.

In 1808, he bought his first ship - the white schooner White Oak.

Since 1809, the manager of the company "Abraham Kunard and Son, shipowners." He signed a contract with the UK government to transport mail between Boston , Newfoundland and Halifax . By 1812, the company owned a fleet of 40 sailing ships.

During the War of 1812, he volunteered for the 2nd battalion of the Halifax regiment and rose to the rank of captain. He held public posts, was authorized by the lighthouses, and became known not only as an experienced businessman, but also as an honest and generous person.

By 1837, he became a millionaire and the father of 9 children (2/7).

After Kunard made great strides in shipping development in his homeland in Halifax , he went to the metropolis and in 1839 founded a shipping and postal company, British and North American Royal Steam Pack Company, together with a number of partners American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (BNARMSPC)), which later received his name (now Cunard Line ). With the support of the British Post Office in 1840, the British voyage from Liverpool to Boston marked the beginning of a regular transatlantic cargo and passenger shipping service. As president of the company, he founded the prize - Atlantic Blue Ribbon .

In 1859, for his merits in the development of transatlantic shipping, Kunard received the title of baronet from Queen Victoria .

He died in London in 1865, after his death, the company he led received his name and became known as Cunard Steamships Limited.

He was buried at the Brompton Cemetery in London.
