Marutea ( French: Marutea Sud ) - an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago ( French Polynesia ). Located 1400 km southeast of the island of Tahiti . The island should be distinguished from the atoll Maruteo , also located in the Tuamotu archipelago.

Geography
The island is an atoll with a large lagoon with an area of 112 km².
History
Marutea was discovered on February 4, 1606 by a Spanish navigator from Portugal, Pedro Fernandez Quiros , who named it San Blas . Another historical name is Lord Hood , so named by the British navigator Edward Edwards . In 1984, the island was bought by Robert Van, a major black pearl merchant from the Tuamotu Islands. In 1993, an airfield was built on Marutea.

Administratively part of the Gambier commune.

In 2002, the population of the island was 178 people.
