Elek ( Hungarian Elek ; Rum. Aletea ) is a city in the Bekes county , in southeastern Hungary . Located on the border with Romania, 25 km from the administrative center of the medie - the city of Bekescsaba . The city covers an area of 54.94 km².

History
Elek, first mentioned in historical sources in 1232 . In 1739 there was a plague epidemic in the city.

The population according to 2010 is 4985 people [1] . According to the last 2001 census, the city’s population numbered 5,531 people. According to the same census, 84% of the population of Elek is represented by Hungarians ; 8% - Romanians ; 4% - Gypsies and 4% - Germans .
