• Singer Matthew Barlow leaves the heavy metal band Iced Earth and becomes a police officer. He is replaced by Tim Owens of Judas Priest .

• Guitarist Mark Jansen leaves the After Forever symphonic metal band and founds a similar Epica project.
• Founded by the Viking metal group Equilibrium .

• Tatu Group successfully conquers the West and performs at the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 in Riga . The group took the third place.
