Absentier

Victor Oliva : Absentier , 1901

Absentier ( fr. Absintheur ) - literally "lover of absinthe." A person who knows a lot about the preparation, use of absinthe - an alcoholic drink based on wormwood extract.

In the 1860s, thanks to Henri Balest, the word absentee became synonymous with the word alcoholic . Balest also introduces the term " absintheuses " to refer to women who use absinthe.

In the French Medical Dictionary ( 1865 edition , edited by Littre and Robin), addiction to absinthe was designated as a form of alcoholism , but with the proviso that the destructive effect of absinthe on the mental functions of a person is caused not only by alcohol, but also by the active substances of wormwood, in particular thujone .

In Russia, “absenter” and “absentist” are often replaced by Englishisms.
