The patrons of the city venerate Saints Hermagor and Fortunate , celebrating July 12th .

Although the Slovenes ascribe Grado slavic origin and call it Gradež, it existed before the arrival of the Slavs as Aquae Gradatae, the center of the sea baths, the parking place for the imperial fleet and the harbor of the great city of Aquileia . During the barbaric invasions, the population of Aquileia began to move to the quieter Grado, and in 452 the Aquileian Bishop Nikita built the basilica of St. Euphemia, the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the baptistery here .

These temples continue to exist in the form that was given to them shortly after Patriarch Peacock I fled from Aquileia to Grado from the invasion of the Lombards in 568. As a result, a split occurred in the patriarchy : the patriarch Grado considered the shore of the Venetian lagoon as his canonical territory, and the patriarch of Aquileia extended his influence on the land deep into the mainland. After many years of fruitless rivalry, the Patriarch of Aquileian took Grado by force in 993 , but he could not hold it, and only in 1027 did the Pope finally approve the supremacy of the Aquilean grimace over Gradovsky.

After the patriarch moved to Venice (in 1453 ), the inhabitants of Grado forgot about church disputes, mainly engaged in fishing and sardine cooking. From the 19th century, the seaside town began to develop as a resort of the Austrian Riviera for scrofulous children and Austrian officials from Trieste. At the end of the First World War, he was annexed to Italy.
