The city covers an area of 41.40 km². The population is 17,216 inhabitants (2010) [1] . According to 2001 data, 96% of the city's residents are Hungarians , 3% are Gypsies , 1% are Germans [2] .
The second largest city in the county. It is located 52 kilometers east of the city of Nyiregyhaz and 77 km northeast of the city of Debrecen . In the city of Matesalka is a railway station. The highway 471 passes through the city.
