Length 125 km, basin area 1,231 km². It flows mainly in the Piedmont region . The source is in the Cotte Alps , on the territory of France near the border with Italy, not far from the Montgenevre pass . In the initial section, the river is called Piccola Dora .

In Ulks , its main tributary, Dora di Bardonecchia, flows into the river. Downstream, many small tributaries flow into the river. After the city, Susa flows through the narrow Susa valley , then flows along the Padan plain and flows into the Po river near Turin . To the city of Susa is considered a mountain stream ( torrente ), then a river ( fiume ).

Since ancient times, Dora Riparia has been used as a source of energy: already in the Middle Ages , river water flowed through canals, set in motion mills , water wheels and other devices. On the territory between the rivers Dora Riparia and Stura di Lanzo , near their confluence with Po, before the Battle of Turin in 1706 there was Regio Park ( Regio Parco ), today - Parco della Colletta ( Parco della Colletta ).

In the 20th century, industrial development and urbanization significantly worsened the environment. Until the 1990s, work to improve the situation was not carried out. In 1999, the Regional Environmental Agency ( Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione Ambientale, ARPA ) in Grulyasco conducted a full study of the Dora Ripariya and Sangone rivers . The study revealed serious river pollution. In 2002, the park parco agro-naturale della Dora Riparia , funded by the commune of Collegno and the Piedmont region, was created to preserve the natural habitat.
