Geography
Demecher is located in the north of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg , not far from the village of Lónyai-főcsatorna . It lies at a distance of 4 km from the village of Kék , 3 km from the village of Gégényen , 11 km from Dombrada , 5 km from Berkesz and 6.5 km from Székely .
You can get there by rail to the station Nyíregyháza – Záhony-vasútvonal .
History
Demecher was first mentioned in written sources in 1333 under the name Dewecher, but later the name is already in the modern version as Demecser.
Today’s well-known sources report that a temple was built in honor of St. George at the place where the settlement was founded, and around 1330-1333 there was already a fishing village in that area.
In the 15th century, Demecher was already mentioned in written sources as a city.
In the 18th - late 19th century, the Demecher families were Korda, Barkóczy, Walter, Zoltán, Buday, Dombrády, Irinyi, Jármy, Krucsay, Okolicsányi, Erőss, Elek, Szikszay, Serte.
In the 20th century , the families of the Hadik-Barkóczy Endre, Elek Emil, László and Dezső, Török Gyula and Grósz Ignácz were distinguished in the city. During the battle between the Red Army and the Romanian army on April 26, 1919, before the invasion, the population was drafted into the Romanian army.
The official status of the city of Demecher received in 2001 .
Population
According to the 2001 census, 91% of the rural population were Hungarians and 9% Roma . [2] In 2005, the total population was 4,525. As of January 1, 2010, the total population of the settlement was 4,345 people. [3]

- Roman Catholic Church built in 1890 .
September 26-28, the traditional cabbage harvest festival is celebrated in Demecher, which is the largest local event.
