Biography
Polish origin. He began to study music in Poznan with Albrecht Agte , he gave concerts from the age of six and by the age of eleven had already given a concert for the royal court in Berlin. However, having ceased to be a child prodigy, Kullak lost high-ranking patrons and at the age of 19 became a medical student in Berlin. Medicine did not interest him too much, and in 1842 he finds an opportunity to return to music, moves to Vienna and becomes a student of Karl Czerny and Otto Nikolai . Kullack’s career goes uphill again, in 1843 he returned to Berlin as a court piano teacher and has been playing music with Prussian princes and princesses for many years. In 1846 he was declared the pianist of the Royal Court.
In 1844, together with F. Commer , F. Geyer and O. Lange, he became a co-founder of the Berlin Union of Musicians ( German: Berliner Tonkünstler-Verein ) and for many years took over as its chairman.
In 1848, together with Julius Stern, Kullack stands at the origins of the Berlin School of Music, later known as the Stern Conservatory , but soon disagrees with his colleagues and in 1851 establishes another educational institution - the New Academy of Music ( it. Neue Akademie der Tonkunst ), often simply referred to as the Kullak Academy. This Academy was completely focused on training pianists and soon became Germany's largest private music institute. Pupils of the Academy and personally of Kullak were many outstanding pianists of that time, including Xaver Sharvenka , Moritz Moszkowski , N. G. Rubinstein .
Kullack's composer heritage includes piano concerts, sonatas, trios, romances and transcriptions on melodies - German, Spanish, Russian. He also owns etudes, which were very popular in pianistic pedagogy of the second half of the 19th century, including the School of Octave Playing ( German Die Schule des Oktavenspiels , 1848 ), The School of Finger Exercises ( German Schule der Fingerübungen ), " Tips and studies "( German: Ratschläge und Studien ) and others.
