Biography
Almost the only source of biography is the General History of Pirates by C. Johnson (1724), the real author of which was Daniel Defoe .
Since childhood, Mary was forced to portray a boy. Her mother, a widow, dressed an illegitimate girl in the clothes of her dead son in order to avoid the suspicions of a rich mother-in-law.
At age 15, she left for Flanders , where (still dressed as a man, under the name Willie), she was enrolled in the infantry regiment as a cadet ; and although everywhere she showed desperate courage in battles, she still could not achieve promotion in any way. Then she said goodbye to the infantry and went to serve in the cavalry , where she conducted several such brilliant operations that she earned the respect of all the officers.
Soon, young Mary fell in love with one officer, who was her comrade in arms. Her chosen one could not understand these strange signs of attention, and already began to suspect that his "young friend" prefers men to women. But one day, Mary found a way to accidentally reveal her secret. When the regiment moved to the winter apartments, Mary bought herself women's clothing, and they openly got married. After the wedding, they rented a house near the castle in Breda ( Netherlands ) and equipped the tavern “The Three Horseshoes” (Three Horseshoes) there.
Mary's husband unexpectedly died, then she again changed into a man’s dress and hired on a Dutch ship leaving for the West Indies .
The ship was captured by English pirates, who were allowed to sail further after being plundered, but Mary Reid, the "only Englishman" aboard the ship, was left by them on a pirate sloop. On the ship, she met with Ann Bonnie and began to cohabit with her captain Jack Rackham . In 1720, the team was caught by the Governor of Jamaica. Mary, like everyone was sentenced to hanging, but her sentence, like Anne's, was postponed due to pregnancy.
Mary died in prison. The cause of death is unknown, but two probable are called: either during childbirth or secretly killed.
