Monument to John Hughes

The monument to John Hughes was erected in Donetsk in honor of John Hughes , a Welsh industrialist, founder of Yuzovka (modern Donetsk ). The author of the monument is a sculptor - Alexander Mitrofanovich Skorykh .

Competition

A competition was announced to create a monument to the founder of the city. Works participating in the competition were exhibited at the executive committee. Won the project of Leonid Artyomovich Brin [1] . A mortgage stone was installed, but disputes arose over the date of the founding of the city. Disputed the primacy of Hughes in favor of the Cossack winteries. The creation of the monument was postponed, while the sculptor died [1] . After the death of Brin, his project remained unclaimed, and the monument began to be made according to the project of Alexander Mitrofanovich Skorykh .

Description

The monument was cast in the central repair and mechanical workshops [2] and installed on September 8, 2001 . The monument stands on a low pedestal, actually in human growth, which, according to the sculptor, symbolizes the human qualities of this figure.

Location

The monument is located in the Voroshilovsky district of Donetsk , on Artyom Street , at the third educational building of Donetsk National Technical University and the library, which can symbolize the profession of John Hughes - an engineer at an English factory. Initially, the monument stood closer to Artyom Street , and in August 2009 the monument was moved closer to the library entrance [3] .
