History
For a long time, these underpopulated places did not have their own administrative structure, being part of larger administrative units with administrative centers outside them. It was not until the time of the Northern Qi Empire in 568 that Wenden County was created here. Under the Ming Empire, the Weihai Guard (威海 卫) was founded in 1398 to protect against wokou pirate attacks, and the Wenden Regiment (文 登 营) in 1427.
Under the Qing Empire, due to the fact that there was no such pirate threat, the territories controlled by Weihai and Jinghai guards were subordinated to Wenden County. In 1895, during the Sino-Japanese War, the port of Weihai, which remained the last fortified base of the Beian Navy , was captured by the Japanese . In 1898, China leased the port to the United Kingdom, resulting in the emergence of a British Weihai colony; the countryside continued to be administered by the Wenden and Rongcheng County Authorities.
In 1930, the port was returned to China, but Great Britain could use the constructed facilities for another 10 years. Administratively, the port of Weihaiwei was transformed into the Weihaiwei Administrative Region (威海 卫 行政区), reporting directly to the Executive Yuan of the Republic of China.
At the end of World War II, by order of the authorities of Shandong Province in August 1945, the territory of the Weihaiwei Administrative Region was declared the city of Weihaiwei (威海 卫 市). In May 1950, the Wenden Special District (文 登 专区) was established; Weihaiwei city was disbanded, and Weihai County (威海 县) was formed instead. In March 1951, at the direction of the East China Military District, the Shandong Provincial Government disbanded the Weihai County, and the city of Weihai was formed instead. In 1954, the city of Weihai was removed from subordination to the authorities of a special region and directly subordinated to the provincial authorities. In 1956, the Wenden Special District was disbanded, and its administrative units were transferred to the Laiyang Special District (莱阳 专区). In 1958, the Laiyang Special District was renamed the Yantai Special Region (烟台 专区); the city of Weihai was thus removed from subordination to the provincial authorities and transferred to subordination to the authorities of the Special Region. In 1967, the Yantai Special District was renamed the Yantai County (烟台 地区).
In 1983, by decree of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Yantai District was disbanded, and instead, the city district of Yantai was created ; the city of Weihai was subordinate to the authorities of Shandong province, delegating its administration to the city district of Yantai.
In 1987, by order of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Weihai City District was formed; the territory of the former city of Weihai became the Huancui district in its composition. In 1988, the Wenden and Rongcheng counties were transformed into urban counties. In 1993, Zhushan County was transformed into a city county subordinate to the authorities of Shandong Province, which delegated its administration to Weihai City District. In 2014, Wenden City County was transformed into an area of city subordination.
