Wrestling competitions at the I Summer Olympics were held on April 10 and 11, one set of medals was played. Competitions were distinguished by the fact that they did not have weight categories. There were also no exact and approved rules. The time of the fights was not limited, and although it was believed that the competitions were held in the Greco-Roman style, athletes were allowed to grab each other's legs.

The first to compete were the Greek Stefanos Christopoulos and the Hungarian Momchilo Tapavits . After a long struggle, the Hungarian still surrendered. Then there was a duel between the German Carl Schumann and the British Lanceston Elliot . This fight was very short. Since the number of athletes was odd, one fighter did not get an opponent, it was Greek Georgios Citas .
Two Greeks competed for the finals - Christopoulos and Citas. This angered the audience, as only one of their compatriots could reach the finals. However, the duel took place, and it was defeated by Tsitas, who threw his rival so that Christopoulos was injured and he had to spend several days in bed. Schumann went to the finals without a duel.
The final dragged on until dark. When the audience began to leave the stadium, it was decided to postpone the final to the next day. On April 11, the final was completed, and Karl Schumann defeated him.
