Story

Two unlucky young people - a student Vladimir Busygin and his random friend Semyon Sevostyanov, nicknamed Silva - escorted two girls whom they had just met in a cafe, home to the suburbs, in the hope of a continued relationship. Having been refused, they run back to the station and are late for the last train. Finding themselves on a cold autumn night in a strange town, they try to beg for someone to spend the night, but to no avail. In one of the windows they see a father and a son, rapidly exploring the relationship. Vladimir, who accidentally overhears the conversation, comes up with an adventurous idea - to be called the illegitimate son of the landlord and, thus, solve the problem with dinner and overnight.

Andrei Grigorievich Sarafanov, clarinet musician (plays in a dance club and movie theater before the show), a good-natured man who raised his two children without a wife, admits his illegitimate son as an unexpected guest. His reaction is so sincere and touching that conscience awakens in Vladimir. In addition, he himself grew up without a father, and Sarafanov’s attitude makes him involuntarily imbued with mutual feelings. He cannot deceive such unlimited trust and unexpectedly understands that he is not indifferent to the problems of this family, the existence of which he had not even suspected of yesterday.

The youngest son of Sarafanov, Vasenka, with all the ardor of youth, is unrequitedly in love with Natalia, a woman living in the neighborhood. However, Silva intervenes in their difficult relationship, who secretly from Vasenka begins to successfully take care of Natalia, but only in order to pleasantly pass the time.

Simultaneously with this love story, another one is played out: Busygin falls in love with Nina’s Sarafanov’s daughter, but since he is a “brother,” he cannot openly admit to her and is silently tormented, jealous of her to her fiancé, an aviation radio engineer.

Unable to endure, in the end, his role, Vladimir confesses to all of Nina, who also unaccountably imbued with not quite sisterly sympathy for her newly-born "brother." They are pondering how to inform Andrei Grigorievich. Silva appears at this moment: Vasenka, finding him visiting Natalya, out of jealousy tried to set her house on fire by throwing a lit box of household matches out the window. A quarrel flares up between Silva and Busygin, and Silva tells the truth to the father Sarafanov in revenge. Vladimir is forced to confess everything. Andrei Grigoryevich refuses to believe this, sincerely loving his “eldest son”, and forgives him this deception: “Whatever it is, but I consider you, Volodya, my son. You are all my children because I love you. I am good or bad, but I love you. And this is the main thing. ”
