The length is 64 km, the basin area is 3223 km², the water discharge at the mouth is 69 m² / s. It flows through the territory of the Campania region (the provinces of Avellino and Salerno ). The source is in the Neapolitan Apennines , on Mount Paflagone ( Italian: Paflagone ), near Mount Cervialto. The height of the source is 420 m above sea level. It flows into the Gulf of Salerno north of the ancient city of Paestum (modern Pesto).
The main tributaries are Tanagro and Calore Lucano .
In ancient times it was called Silar ( lat. Silarus ). In 71 BC e. near the river, Mark Licinius Crassus defeated the army of Spartacus .
