The administrative center is Shenkursk , the distance to the nearest railway station in Velsk is 148 km (to the south), the distance to Arkhangelsk is 373 km.
Geography
Shenkursky district is located in the southern part of the Arkhangelsk region and is equated to the regions of the Far North . [four]
The area of its territory is 11,297.67 km² or 1.9% of the territory of the region. The structure of the municipality includes the city of Shenkursk and 253 rural settlements, which form 11 rural administrations and the city administration.
Bordered by:
- in the west with Nyandoma district
- in the northwest with the Plesetsk District
- in the northeast with Vinogradov district
- in the east with Verkhnetoemsky district
- to the southeast with Ustyansky district
- in the south with Velsky region
The largest rivers are: Vaga , Nelenga , Syum , Led , Poch , Sheng , Shelash , Padenga , Selmenga , Cheryenga , Puya , Sulanda . The largest lake in the area is Lum .
The boundaries of the Shenkursky municipal district are established by the law of the Arkhangelsk region of September 23, 2004 [5] .
History
The Shenkursky District was formed in 1929 as part of the Nyandomsky District of the Northern Territory of the RSFSR , with a center in the town of Shenkursk , in the territory of the Middle Volga and Shegovarsky volosts (without Kitsky Village Soviet) of the abolished Shenkursky district [6] . In 1959, six village councils of the abolished Rovdinsky district were added to the Shenkursky district - Verkopadengsky, Mikhailovsky, Padengsky, Suland, Ust-Padengsky and Ust-Puysky.
With the formation of the North-Western economic region in December 1962, a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR was issued on February 1, 1963 “On the enlargement of rural areas and the formation of industrial areas of the Arkhangelsk region ”, according to which the district was reorganized into Shenkursky rural district from 12 village councils. In 1965, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Armed Forces of the RSFSR of January 12, 1965 and by the decision of the DEC of January 18, 1965, the Shenkursky rural area was abolished and the Shenkursky district re-established with the center in the city of Shenkursk . The area of the district has not changed.

The population of the district is 15.1 thousand people. (2010) or 1.3% of the region’s resident population (without a NAO ). The population density is 1.5 inhabitants per 1 km². The city is home to 5.7 thousand people, in the countryside - 11, 3 thousand people. The working-age population makes up 60% of the total number, children and adolescents younger than 16 years old - 16% and 23% are older people. 1/3 of the working-age population is employed in the manufacturing sector, the rest in the service sector. In 2002, according to the results of the All-Russian population census, the population of the region was more - 18.7 thousand inhabitants.

The Shenkursky district as an administrative-territorial unit of the region includes 1 city of regional significance (within the boundaries of which the urban settlement of the same name was established), and also 12 village councils (within whose borders the same-named rural settlements were usually formed) [17] [18] [19] .

- Fedorogorskoye and Shakhanovskoye - to Fedorogorskoye , with the administrative center in the village of Nikiforovskaya;
- Nikolskoe and Tarnyanskoe - in Nikolskoye , with the administrative center in the village Shipunovskaya;
- Shegovarskoe and Yamskogorskoe - in Shegovarskoe , with the administrative center in the village Shegovary.

Economy
The modern economy of Shenkursky District is represented by small and medium enterprises engaged in the harvesting and processing of wood, agricultural production, and the provision of various services; municipal enterprises, social and cultural institutions and individual entrepreneurs without a legal entity. The large and medium-sized enterprises include the food factory Shenkursky, the editorial office of the newspaper Vazhsky Krai , PU No. 44, OGPS No. 18, Shenkursky branch of Avtodorogi LLC, Shenkursk-les LLC, two housing and public utilities enterprises and all budget institutions . In the territories of rural settlements there are mainly social institutions, the contingent and the staff of which tend to decrease, as well as logging enterprises - limited liability companies belonging to the category of small enterprises. The basis of the budget is the forest industry enterprises: LLC “Yumizh-Les”, LLC “Triada”, LLC “Yuryev-les”, LLC “European Technologies”, LLC “Shenkursk-les”, as well as enterprises of housing and public utilities, agricultural organizations and the public sector.
Agriculture
There are 14 collective agricultural producers (10 farms, 2 agricultural production cooperatives, 1 limited liability company, 1 open joint-stock company), 14 small farms, 4,620 private farms in the Shenkursky district. Of the processing industry, LLC Shenkursky Dairy Plant and MUP Shenkursky Food Factory are operating.
Transportation
The federal highway M8 passes through the district, there are no railways. The length of municipal roads is 420.92 km.
Healthcare
The district's health care is represented by the Municipal Medical Institution “Shenkursky Central District Hospital named after N. N. Priorov , working in the CHI system and partly on the budget. The structure of the MUZ "Shenkurskiy CRH them.
