Kalaf ( Greek: κάλαθος , lat. Calathus ) is a round wicker basket ( τάλαρος ) used by ancient Greek women in various works, for fruits, flowers, and also for storing cheese, and especially for storing yarn and wool and the like, in the shape of a lily flower. Among the Romans, this was qualus , to which the quasillaria , the spinner, dates back to [1] [2] . It was made of various materials: clay, wood, precious metals. Calaf played a large role in the festivities dedicated to the goddesses Athena and Demeter , and was a symbol of Persephone's flower basket. Calaf was the name of the sacred fruit basket of Demeter, which was carried in a solemn procession on the fourth day of the Eleusinian Mysteries in a sacred chariot during the cliques of the people: Χαῖρε Δήμητερ [1] . Thanks to the festivities, an ancient Greek ceramic vessel of a similar shape for wine and other liquids and the base of the Corinthian capitals in the form of a wicker basket of acanthus leaves , as well as the headdress of Hecate , Artemis of Ephesus , Serapis - a symbol of fertility got their name [3] .
