Biography
He began to play football in Gorky Sportinternate. After school he worked as a turner . In the army he served near Tambov in the air defense forces, played the air defense championship. He participated in the final championship of the USSR Armed Forces in Baku , after which he turned up for viewing at CSKA , but did not make it to the team. After demobilization In 1975, Melnikov played in the second league for the Volga Gorky . In the summer of the same year, he entered the Gorky branch of the Leningrad Lesgaft Institute , after which he accepted the invitation to play for Zenit .
He spent his entire career in the Higher League at Zenit, which included becoming the USSR champion in 1984 .
He graduated from high school coaches, was the head coach of Zenit in 1992-1994.
In 1999-2001 he worked as a team leader at Zenit. In 2006–2007, he was the head coach of the Metallurg-Kuzbass Novokuznetsk club. From May 16 to September 25, 2008 - the head coach of Dynamo SPb .
