Bikini Kill ( MFA: [bɪˈkiːni ˈkɪl] ) is an American rock band that formed in 1990 in Olympia , Washington , played radical punk rock and became famous for provocative and exciting stage performances, overpoliticized texts, feminist ideas and slogans (“The Revolution Style Now! ”). Bikini Kill became one of the founders and became for some time leaders of the riot grrrl movement , whose initial task was to undermine the “male” hierarchy in indie-rock [2] .

Group History
Bikini Kill was formed in 1990 , when Evergreen college students Kathleen Hannah , Toby Vail and Katie Wilcox decided to expand the sphere of influence of the feminist fanzine, which they also published. By inviting guitarist Billy Carren, also known under the pseudonym Billy Boredom, they turned into a confrontational punk band, borrowing the name from the same fanzine.
Debuting in 1991 with the album Revolution Girl Style Now , released on a homemade cassette, the group signed a contract with the label Kill Rock Stars and released here Bikini Kill EP; The record, recorded with producer Ian McKay , the leader of Fugazi , contained mostly new versions of the songs released on the tape. The mini-album Yeah, Yeah, Yeah , recorded together with the British band Huggy Bear , whose side was entitled “Our Troubled Youth”, was followed by their joint tour of England, after which they started talking about the Riot Grrrl movement as a new punk revolution. After releasing two more (more skillfully worked, but no less powerful and uncompromising) albums, Bikini Kill disbanded in 1998 [2] .
After the breakup
Vail, who has always participated in several projects at the same time, continued to perform with the band Spider and the Webs . Wilcox plays Casual Dots , Karen plays Boo-Boo and the Corrections . Kathleen Hannah, who had collaborated with The Fakes for a while and then performed a solo (Julie Ruin album), is now a member of the group Le Tigre .
On November 4, 2017, Kathleen Hannah, Katie Wilcox and Toby Vale, three of the four participants in the original line-up, performed at The Kitchen New York Club. The performance took place at a party dedicated to the release of a book about the debut album of The Raincoats . The trio played only one song, “For Tammy Rae”, from the 1993 album “Pussy Whipped”, after which they gave way to the hostess of the evening, The Raincoats . [3] On January 15, 2019, the group announced a reunion tour. [4]
