Biography
Michael Shapiro was born into a family of musicians. He studied ( composition ) at the Juilliard School with Elie Siegmeister and Vincent Persichetti , conducting with Karl Bamberger at Mannes College . As a teenager, he was the winner of various pianistic contests.
Michael Shapiro served as a music consultant for the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC for two years. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Union of Conductors and works as an assistant conductor at the Zurich Opera Studio. Shapiro regularly performs premieres of his compositions with The Chappaqua Orchestra. In 2003, the composer wrote the music for the Frankenstein film directed by James Whale.
Shapiro writes in many styles - piano works, chamber and orchestral music, music for films and television shows. The composer’s works are widely performed in the USA, Canada and Europe. He has received many awards and prizes. The first public performances are Shapiro's music obliged to the National Public Radio, the Canadian Broadcasing System, the Israel Broadcasting Authority, and the largest radio and television stations in New York, including WQXR and WCBS. -T. The musician also received awards and grants from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Composer's Assistance to Composers Assistance Association (Martha Baird Rockefeller Composer's Assistance), Henry Evans Traveling Fellowship of Columbia University Travelers Association and others.
The New York Times described the music of Michael Shapiro as “possessing a rare melodic gift.”
