Built by the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites from 1605 as the Church of Sts. Paul's Like the neighboring Santa Susanna , the temple was completely designed by Carlo Madern . After the battle on White Mountain ( 1620 ), he was re-consecrated in honor of the Virgin Mary and the victories of Catholics over the enemies of the faith. In 1624 , Schipione Borghese took over the financing of the construction (in exchange for the ancient statue of Hermaphrodite , found during excavations). Two years later, construction was completed, but the interior decoration continued until the end of the 17th century. After the fire of 1833 , restoration was required.
The Italian Cardinal Pietro Vidoni (1610–1681) is buried here.
