Title
The city got its name from the Shchigor River. In its turn, the name of the river comes from the popular term Shigor (plural of Shigra ) - “a forested crest of narrow interbeam tubercles” [4] [5] .
Legends about the origin of the name
By the end of the 19th century, the term Shchigor was almost out of use, therefore many legends were born that "explained" the origin of the name of the river. Some of these legends were recorded by L. E. Markov:
- According to one legend, the word Shigor comes from the Turkic curse that the Crimean Tatars used when crossing Shchigor, which during the existence of the Muravsky Way was a turbulent and full-flowing river.
- According to another legend, in the vicinity of the river lived a terrible and elusive robber, whose name was Shchigor; he was named after the river.
History

In the place of the modern city, from the 17th century there was the village of Troitsk , which got its name from the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity located in it, at the fortress on the Shchigor River . The fortress was created to protect against attacks by the Crimean Tatars and was one of the rear fortresses in case of breakthrough of the Belgorod line . There were no stone buildings in the fortress. By the end of the 18th century, the fortress completely lost its defense significance and was demolished.
