He studied law in Vienna and in 1848 was elected to the Austrian Reichstag . His proposal to abolish serfdom made him popular among peasants, who, however, did not follow his appeals to the revolutionary movement. Kudlich fled abroad and participated in the Baden uprising, after the pacification of which he took refuge in Switzerland . In absentia, sentenced to death, he went to America , studied medicine and settled as a doctor near New York . When he returned to Austria in 1872 , Vienna presented him with the title of honorary citizen. He depicted everything he had experienced in the Rückblicke uud Erinnerungen (Vienna, 1873 ).
