Pedigree and biography
According to the stories of his daughter, E. I. Roerich , Ivan Shaposhnikov’s grandfather came to Russia under Peter I from Riga , where he was mayor . When Peter I visited the Baltic region, he presented the king with a richly decorated copy of the Monomakh hat . Peter was pleased with the reception and invited the burgomaster to move to Russia . Upon acceptance by the grandfather of Russian citizenship, Peter gave him a new surname - Shaposhnikov [1] [2] . The grandfather had one son Ivan, who married Vorontsova and they had four sons and six daughters. One of the sons - Ivan Ivanovich Shaposhnikov. [3] .
In 1844 - 1847, I. I. Shaposhnikov studied at the St. Petersburg Commercial School, and from 1855 to 1864 at the Imperial Academy of Arts . Since 1865 he was a teacher at the Construction School (in 1882 it was renamed the Institute of Civil Engineers ); since 1872 - a teacher at the Technological Institute, and since 1882 - an architect of the Main Engineering Department of the military department. In 1870, he became a founding member of the St. Petersburg Imperial Society of Architects . [four]
He rebuilt the church of the Ulan Regiment in Peterhof , built cottages in the vicinity of St. Petersburg, the temporary church of St. Catherine’s in St. Petersburg, the house for washing and burial in the Preobrazhensky Jewish cemetery , worked on the construction of the buildings of the Alexander Steel Plant. The brightest and most grandiose building is the Great Choral Synagogue . The project, which won first place in the selection competition, was implemented in 1880 together with L.I. Bakhman . The synagogue was built in 1883 - 1893 under the supervision of the architect A.V. Malov.
He was married to Ekaterina Golenishcheva-Kutuzova. Their two children - son Illarion and daughter Anna, died at the age of five, and daughter Elena , having married the artist, traveler and public figure Nikolai Roerich , gained fame in Russia as a religious philosopher.
