Story

Nicolas Philibert ( Jean-Paul Belmondo ) discovered America in 1787, having illegally arrived there in the hold of a ship of the Westind company. He had neither documents nor money with him, and for a start he was sent to prison, where he spent three days. Five years later, the citizens of the country that had so badly received him looked at him with envy. Thanks to his enterprise, he quickly became rich and was going to marry the only daughter of one of the richest people in the country, a major grain merchant, whose thirty ships delivered goods to all corners of the world. Nicolas began as a watchman at his future father-in-law, but soon became his confidant and assistant.

During the wedding, an unexpected incident occurs: one of the rejected fans of the bride claims that the groom is already married and therefore has no right to get married. The pastor interrupts the wedding ceremony and offers Nicolas to go to France and divorce his wife. The father of the bride is desperate, because in France divorces are forbidden. But the pastor tells him encouraging news: a revolution has taken place in the country, and the first decree issued by the new government allows for divorces. Two weeks later, Nicolas leaves for France on the ship "Flying Fish", loaded with grain. He must not only file a divorce, but also sell grain. But he is not allowed to enter the marina. In France, hunger, and people demand to miss the ship, however, authorities suspect that the grain may be poisoned, and detain Nicolas until clarification. He manages to escape from custody, and he goes in search of his wife Charlotte. She was a commoner, daughter of a wine merchant, but favored only nobles. Six years ago, Nicolas killed a baron who molested her, and was forced to flee France on the very first ship. So he ended up in America. Charlotte's father once found him a child and took him to him. With Charlotte, they grew up together as a brother and sister, and then married. But they were haunted by the prediction of one gypsy, according to which Charlotte was to become a princess, and Nicolas - to find fame and money in the New World. Six months after her husband’s flight, Charlotte became the lover of a prince ( Sami Frey ) and fled with him. For four years her father had not heard anything about her. Nicolas will have to find her. He found her among the royalists led by the prince. But, having received an offer from one prince, she goes with him, hoping that the gypsy’s prediction will finally come true. Nicolas gets a divorce, but for some reason he is not in a hurry to his bride, and again goes to look for Charlotte. They meet in Austria, where she goes with the prince, literally on the battlefield, where Nicolas eventually picks up someone’s gun and joins the French soldiers attacking the position of the Austrians.

“Fifteen years passed, and the prediction of the old gypsy came true: in 1809, Marshal Philibert received the title of Prince of the Empire.” And his wife Charlotte finally became a princess.
