Kourion ( Kuriy , ancient Greek Κούριον , Latin Curium ) is an ancient city in Cyprus near modern Limassol , which existed from ancient times to the Middle Ages. Built in the XII century BC. er Mykene who took part in the Trojan War . Belonged to the Greeks , Romans , Byzantines . Placed on a 70-meter cliff to ensure the safety of citizens. Kourion was one of the city-states . Where there used to be houses and terms , mosaics are preserved. All buildings were built of limestone and were a complex of 30 very different rooms, including several swimming pools.
The city has preserved an ancient theater (built by the Greeks in the II century BC. , Rebuilt several times by the Romans).
Located on the shores of the Bay of Episkopi .
Now on the site of the ancient city-state is the Archaeological Park. Here you can see the ruins of Kourion. The most famous place - the restored theater of the Greco-Roman era, built in the II century BC. er [1] During the excavations, the house of Evstolios with Roman baths, the house of Achilles and the house of the Gladiators with beautiful mosaic images were discovered. Here are the ruins of an early Christian basilica dating back to the 5th century AD. e., as well as the ruins of private houses and a large nympheum.
Not far from the Kourion Archaeological Park are the ruins of the Kourion Stadium and the sanctuary of Apollo Gilata .
Kings of Kourion
- Damas - mentioned in the inscription (673/2 BC) of the Assyrian king Esarhaddon, among other Cypriot kings subordinate to him;
- Stasanor - took part in the anti-Persian uprising of 350-344 BC. e., however, then switched to the side of the Persians;
- Pasikrat - the last king, in 332 BC. er supported by his fleet Alexander of Macedon against the Persians.
