Economics
In 2010, out of 7833 people of working age (from 15 to 64 years old), 5890 were economically active , 1943 inactive (activity indicator 75.2%, in 1999 - 70.5%). Of the 5890 active able-bodied residents, 5387 people worked (2806 men and 2581 women), 503 were unemployed (171 men and 332 women). Among 1943 able-bodied inactive citizens, 609 were pupils or students , 635 were pensioners , and another 699 were inactive for other reasons [8] [9] .
Throughout 2010, there were 6464 taxable households in the commune , in which 11 053.5 people lived. The median income was 22 thousand 179 euros per taxpayer [10] .
Roquebrune Village
This village belongs to the so-called " stone nests " - fortified settlements that local residents created to flee from the Saracen raids in the 8th century. In 970, a castle was laid by Count Ventimiglia here on a high rock, and in the 13th century a tower with three-meter-thick walls was erected. The castle was rebuilt several times by the Grimaldi family, but at the beginning of the XX century it was bought by the Englishman William Intrem, who added an English tower.
The historical appearance of the village is well preserved. At the entrance to it stands an olive tree, the crown of which reaches a diameter of 8 meters. It is alleged that he is about four thousand years old. The French historian Anoto, who lived in Roquebrune, led his students, future Prime Ministers of France Clemenceau , Poincare , Briand , to this tree.
Of interest is the church of St. 17th-century margaritas with a copy of Michelangelo ’s Last Judgment fresco. At the edge of the village is a 15th-century La Pos chapel - it was erected in gratitude for ridding Roquebrune of the plague . Starting from 1467, a colorful procession sets off every year on August 5 from the chapel. Locals act out scenes from the life of Jesus Christ . Roles in this procession are passed down in the family from generation to generation.
Roquebrune-Village is also called Upper Roquebrune, so as not to be confused with the resort Roquebrune, located on the coast. Lower Roquebrune is built up with typical houses and is not interesting from an architectural point of view.
Roquebrune-Cap-Martin
The coastal Roquebrune is currently a single whole with the town of Cap Martin . The English Queen Victoria loved to be here. Rested here were the French Empress Eugene , Coco Chanel , Greta Garbo , Winston Churchill . The famous architect Le Corbusier (1887-1965) liked to walk along the coastal path - from the park at the end of the cape to Monaco. This boardwalk now bears his name. At the local cemetery lie the sister of the last Russian Tsar, Ksenia Alexandrovna and her husband, Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich .
This resort town has its own train station, on the platforms of which TER class trains stop.
