Akyn

Akyn on a postage stamp of Kazakhstan, 2009

Akyn is a poet-improviser , poet and singer of the Turkic-speaking peoples of Central Asia , in particular, the Kazakhs , Kyrgyz , Nogai and Karakalpaks . There are similar folk singers - zhyrshy ( snakes ) (narrators) and olanski (songwriters), but, unlike akyns, they are performers, not creators of works. The verses of the akyn are chanted to the sounds of ( dombra , komuz ) - a stringed plucked instrument with an oval body, a fingerboard and three (two) strings.

Akin is often completely improvising, reacting to any events in society or to the situation at national holidays, etc. At holidays, a kind of competition of akyns - ayts is often held. During the competition, the akyns, amusing the people, alternately in a poetic form try to make fun of each other or choose any arbitrary topic. Sometimes the authorities try to censor aytis when it comes to those in power or politics [1] .

The nomadic way of life and the transient nature of akyns' art did not allow in the past to record and save works on paper. Unfortunately, most of the works of akyns remained lost.
