Geography
Akhunui is located in the South Pacific in the Tuamotu Archipelago . The nearest mainland, South America , is about 5,600 km [1] . Approximately 55 km to the north-west is the island of Paraoa , 120 km to the northeast - Vairatea [2] .
It has the shape of a ring with a diameter of about 6 km. From the point of view of geology, is an atoll , in the center of which is a large lagoon, completely surrounded by land. It consists of several motus (one large in the eastern part and 18 smaller ones) [2] . The land area of Ahunui is 5.7 km².
The island is covered with coconut palms , many nesting seabirds . The climate is tropical . Subject to the ravages of tropical cyclones [1] .
History
Akhunui was discovered in 1826 by Briton Frederick William Beachy , who gave him the name of the island of Bayem Martin ( eng. Byam Martin Island ). Subsequently, the atoll was known under the name Cockburn ( English Cockburn Island ).
Administrative division
Administratively, the island is part of the municipality of Khao .
Population
There is a small jetty in the northwestern part of Akhunui. There is no permanent population on the atoll.
