According to the interstate Agreement signed in 2017, certain units of the Armed Forces of South Ossetia are part of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation [3] .

South Ossetian Armed Forces before the Five Day War of 2008
By the beginning of the war with Georgia, the regular army totaled 3,000 people [4] in service with the army of South Ossetia was: [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] :

In service with the Air Force of the republic were 4 (according to Lenta.ru , 3 [9] ) Mi-8 helicopters. Currently, they are practically not operational. After the end of the war with Georgia and Russia's recognition of the independence of South Ossetia, there was a decrease in the number of personnel and equipment in the armed forces of a partially recognized state.
