Biography
Nikolai Birilev was born on December 9, 1829 in the Kalyazinsky district of the Tver province. He was brought up in a family with his brothers Alexei and Mikhail (09.15.1831-13.11.1885), who in the future became naval officers.
In service since 1845. In 1847 he graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps . Further transferred to the Black Sea Fleet . In the years 1848-1850 on the frigate "Cahul", the ship "Selafail" and the steamer "Fighter" cruised in the Black Sea. In the campaign of 1852 on the corvette, “Pilad” cruised off the east coast of the Black Sea and participated in shootings with mountaineers as a hunter in a coastal detachment. April 19, 1853 produced lieutenants . In the campaign of 1853 as a flag officer on the ships "Yagudiiel", "Grand Duke Constantine" and "Twelve Apostles" cruised in the Black Sea. On the steamboat “Crimea” participated in the Battle of Sinop and for the excellent presence of spirit and accurate execution of orders was awarded the Order of St. Anna of the III degree with a bow and was appointed adjutant of the 1st brigade of the 4th naval division.
During the Crimean War of 1853-1856, he participated in the Sinop battle and the defense of Sevastopol (1854-1855) [2] .
He fought for Sevastopol from September 9, 1854 to May 5 (6?), 1855, when he was seriously wounded by buckshot in the head. The commander of detachments of hunters (volunteers) in numerous sorties from the 3rd bastion, where he commanded outposts with the rank of lieutenant. The attack of Birilev at the head of a detachment of 750 hunters on March 11, 1855, when he managed to capture the batteries of the right parallel, tear down a battery of 10 guns to the base, and rivet eight guns tightly, is widely known. For the defense of Sevastopol, he was awarded the Order of St. George of the 4th degree , the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with swords , the Order of St. Anna of the 2nd degree with swords and the imperial crown .
The decree of the emperor of March 2, 1855 on the presentation of Nikolai Alekseevich to "George": "In retribution for the excellent courage and courage shown in the night sorties from Sevastopol on December 20, 1854 and January 20, 1855."
After the war he was transferred to the Baltic Fleet and was appointed the senior officer of the battleship Vyborg .
In July 1859, N. A. Birilev, at his own request, was appointed to command the corridor Posadnik , who was sent to the Russian Far East as part of the 3rd Amur detachment. Having made a semicircular trip, he visited Singapore , Batavia , China and Japan , participated in the Tsushima incident . In 1863 he returned to the Baltic and cruised on the same corvette off the Courland coast during tensions in Poland.
In 1864-1866 he commanded the sail-steam frigate " Oleg ". In 1865 he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of the III degree .
February 5, 1865 Nikolai Alekseevich and Tyutcheva, Maria Fedorovna (1840-1872) (daughter of the famous poet F.I. Tyutchev ) got married in the Russian church in Nice .
On January 30, 1866, their daughter Maria was born, who soon died, and Birilev fell into a severe depression (apparently, the Sevastopol wound also affected), from which he could not recover until his death.
In 1872 he retired.
Nikolai Alekseevich Birilev died on June 5, 1882 in the city of St. Petersburg and was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in St. Petersburg , near the graves of his wife and father-in-law - poet F. I. Tyutchev .
Memory
The island of Birileva (Tagudo) in the Sea of Japan is named after him.
