The administrative center is the city of Kandalaksha .
Geography
The municipality of Kandalaksha district is located in the south of the Kola Peninsula, it is part of the Murmansk region (the distance to the city of Murmansk is 244 km), it borders in the north with the municipality of Kovdor district and the municipality of the city of Polyarnye Zori with jurisdictional territory; in the south - with the Republic of Karelia; in the east - with the municipality, the city of Apatity with its subordinate territory and municipality Tersky district; in the west - with Finland. The area of the district is 14 410 km² [6] .
History
Kandalaksha district was formed in 1927 . Until May 1938, it was part of the Autonomous Karelian Soviet Socialist Republic , when, together with the Murmansk District of the Leningrad Region, it became an integral part of the Murmansk Region.
On September 13, 2007 the municipal district “Kandalaksha city with jurisdiction” was renamed Kandalaksha district [7] .

The population living in the territory of the municipal district, according to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census, is 49,544, of which 23,127 are men (46.7%) and 26,417 are women (53.3%) [13] [14] .

According to the 2010 census, 92.6% of the population of the municipality are Russians , 2.7% are Ukrainians , 1.4% are Belarusians , and 3.3% are of other nationalities [15] .

Education
In Kandalaksha district there are 13 general educational institutions [47] . A network of further education has been developed: 2 art schools, a sports and music school, 3 centers for the creativity of children and youth, a children's ecological and biological station [48] . In the center of the district there is Kandalaksha Industrial College.
