This list lists US aircraft that were lost during combat missions over North Vietnam during the Vietnam War from July to August 1965 . Only losses that satisfy the following conditions are given:
- the loss is irrevocable, that is, the aircraft is destroyed or written off due to the damage received;
- the loss was incurred due to combat or non-combat reasons in the region of Southeast Asia (including North Vietnam , South Vietnam , Laos , Cambodia , Thailand , Japan , China ) and is associated with combat operations against North Vietnam (Democratic Republic of Vietnam);
- the lost aircraft was in service with the Air Force , the Navy , the Marine Corps or the United States Army ;
- The loss occurred between July 1 and August 31, 1965 .
The list is based on open sources. The information contained in it may be incomplete or inaccurate, and may also not correspond to official data from the US Department of Defense and the NRW . Nevertheless, it lists almost all the aircraft, whose crews died or were captured. Incompleteness is mainly associated with those aircraft whose crews were evacuated by the US search and rescue services, as well as with aircraft lost outside North Vietnam (in this case it is not always possible to determine whether the loss was related to operations against this country).
The list does not affect the loss of American aircraft incurred in operations against targets in South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The list was compiled without using the data of the monograph by Vietnam Air Losses by Christopher Hobson.
Content
Period Brief
In July — August 1965, American aviation continued the bombing of North Vietnam as part of Operation Rolling Thunder . The bulk of the strikes continued to be inflicted on the southern regions of the country. On July 24, the North Vietnamese air defense forces for the first time used anti-aircraft missile systems , shooting down one (according to Soviet data, three) American aircraft. Another plane was shot down at night on August 12th . After each of these cases, US aircraft struck at the alleged positions of the air defense missile system, but did not achieve any results, suffering heavy losses from anti-aircraft artillery fire. Fighter aircraft of North Vietnam continued to remain inactive.
