Safa Giray

The son of the Crimean prince Fetikh Geray and Jalal Sultan, the granddaughters of the Nogai Murza Hadzhike , the nephew and successor of Kazan Khan Sahib Girey (1521-1524).

After the departure of his uncle, Sahib Gerai from Kazan to the Crimea, 13-year-old Safa Gerai took the khan’s throne in 1524 with the support of Kazan Karachibeks led by Bulat Shirin . He recognized himself as a vassal of the Ottoman Sultan ^[1] , took a series of campaigns against Moscow ( 1536 - 1537 , 1541 - 1542 , 1548 ).

In 1531 was expelled by the Kazan nobility. Khan planted the Moscow protege Jan-Ali . In 1535, Safa Gerai regained the khan’s throne in Kazan with the help of the Crimean troops. He married Suyumbike , wife of Jan-Ali , daughter of the Nogai Biy Yusuf (1549-1554).

At the beginning of 1546, due to popular unrest, he was forced to retire to the Nogai Horde to his father-in-law, Biy Yusuf . In July 1546, with the help of the Nogai army, led by the son of Biy Yusuf, Yunus took Kazan . Shah Ali fled to Moscow. After being approved in power, Safa-Girey did not give Yunus the promised place of the Mangyt Bek in Kazan .

Kazan khan Safa-Girey died in 1549 under completely unclear circumstances ( Karamzin writes that the khan was “drunk killed in the palace.” This version is called into question by Khudyakov ^[2] ).
