In 1863, he resigned as chief surgeon at a London hospital and devoted himself entirely to eye practice.
From 1876 he was a professor of eye diseases at the hospital in Middlesex and here with his brilliant operations he gained European fame. Critchet published A course of lectures on diseases of the eye ( 1854 ); "Extraction of cataract in cases of closed and adherent pupil" ( 1856 ); “A new method of forming an artifical pupil by tuing the Iris or Iridesis” (in Ophthalmic Hospital Reports).
