In 1853 - 1868 he preached on the Gold Coast (now Ghana ); did much to study West African languages ​​and translated the Bible into the Chvi language (Tshi; Basel, 1871 ). His other works are: “A grammar of the Asante and Fante (Tshi) language” ( 1875 ); "3600 Tshi proverbs" ( 1879 ), "Tshi and English dictionary" ( 1881 ); “Uebungen in der Akra od.
