Group History
Origins: 2000–2001
Machinae Supremacy was formed in the summer of 2000 by Robert Styarnstrom, Kal Hellmer and Jonas Rorling. The name of the group existed before that, but only a few months later the group decided on a specific style that they wanted to adhere to. Andreas Gerdin, Rohrling's longtime friend joined as a keyboard player, and Tobby as a drummer. Together they recorded their first track, Cryosleep .
Deciding on the original style and being fans of the Commodore 64, they stopped at using its SID chip in the music they were creating. This style was subsequently defined by the participants as SID Metal. In their music, they tried to convey the resonance caused by self-confidence, enlightenment in people's lives, in their ability to manage their lives.
Promo: 2001–2003
The band found the Internet to be the best way to reach a wider audience, rejecting the traditional sending of demo tracks to record labels. In 2001, the official website was launched, providing nine free tracks.
Machinae Supremacy attempted to reach the Commodore 64 community in an attempt to gather more fans. During this period, the track The Great Gianna Sisters was released, a remix of the title theme of the same game written by Chris Halsbek. Placing this track on various Commodore 64 gaming music remix sites brought the band their first success, which was later augmented by the Sidology series. At the same time, Machinae Supremacy performed for the first time abroad, at a nightclub in Soho, as part of Back In Time Live.
During 2001, Stjärnstrom and Hellmer together with their friend Tomi Tauryenen formed the short-term punk-rock project FLAK. In order to designate their political position, only three tracks were released, some of which later had an impact on the work of Machinae Supremacy.
In 2002, Tobbie left the band and was replaced by Thomas Nielsen, who spoke with Robert in Garden Of Concrete, and his former comrade. Over the next few years, they released 25 free tracks — about two albums of decent material — before they started working on their first studio album.
Deus Ex Machinae: 2004–2005
In May 2004, the band announced the release of their first commercial album, Deus Ex Machinae, with the participation of Music By Design Records (MbD). The first thousandth edition of the album sold during the year, which led to the release of the second edition in 2005. Shortly after its release, MbD stopped selling and Machinae Supremacy was left without a record label for the next album under development. This album did not see the light until 2006.
During 2004, the group participated in a number of third-party projects. They were working on the soundtrack for the game Jets'n'Guns , produced by RakeInGrass. This soundtrack was posted for free download on December 4, 2004. At the same time, their three tracks were included in the In the Groove series of music games: Hybrid , Bouff , and Cryosleep .
2005 turned out to be relatively quiet - the group focused on completing the second album and searching for its publisher. Track Ghost (Beneath The Surface) was released as excluded from the future album and was very well received by the audience. Then the group collaborated with the German game edition GameStar and released two tracks: Loot Burn Rape Kill Repeat (June 25, for WoW special) and Multiball (November 20, for Battlefield2 special).
Later that year, Hellmer moved from Luleå, and could no longer participate in the group. He was replaced by Johan Palovaara.
Redeemer: 2006–2007
In early 2006, namely on January 9, the group, finally completing the Sidology series, released the track Sidology Episode II - Trinity . In addition, a subsidiary of Hubnester Industries was engaged in soundtracks. 2006 was a turning point in the history of Machinae Supremacy, it was marked by the independent release on March 18 of the band's second commercial album, Redeemer , which was distributed through their own website. However, later, on September 27, it was announced that it had signed a contract with Spinefarm Records .
Overworld: 2007–2010
On October 9, shortly after the band released the first video for the song Through the Looking Glass , it became known that Johan "Poe" Palovaara had left the band. As it turned out later, this was due to his unwillingness to play in such projects as Play! and “diverging priorities”. Johan "Dezo" Hedlund took his place as bass player.
During 2007, the group worked on the third album of Overworld , periodically reporting on the current status at the official forum. At the end of November, the premiere of the single from the new album, a cover of Britney Spears Gimme More, took place on the Finnish radio station YleX. The album itself was released on February 13, 2008. After the band’s redesign of the band’s official site, the Ogg Vorbis audio files placed there were replaced with files in the lossless compression format FLAC . In October, the band released a cover version of the title theme from Bionic Commando .
In August 2009, the band left drummer Tomas Nilsén for “personal reasons”. In October, Niklas Karvonen took his place.
A View From The End Of The World: 2010–2012
On October 4, the following message appeared on the official website of the group:
There was no news from us for a while and for good reason. We recorded our next album, A View From The End Of The World, which will be released on November 3, 2010 on Spinefarm Records.
Within a month after the appearance of the message, the group “warmed up” the interest of the listeners, periodically posting separate songs (“Force Feedback”, “Nova Prospekt”, “Rocket Dragon”, “Shinigami” and “The Greatest Show on Earth”). November 3, 2010 album was released. Shortly after the release of the album, the musicians reported that they have accumulated a lot of new material, which will begin the next album.
Rise Of A Digital Nation: 2012
The album was released on October 19, 2012 via Spinefarm Records. During the tour in support of the new album, the band also visited Russia: November 30 in St. Petersburg, December 1 ˜- in Moscow.
