Friends (TV series)

The series takes place mainly in Manhattan ( New York ) at approximately the same time period when the series was shot, in 1994-2004.

The main plot line of the series is the romantic relationship of Ross and Rachel ^[4] , which parted and reconnected several times. The protagonists of the project are young residents (“twenty with something”) of New York, just graduated from college , looking for a place in life and regularly meeting in a small cafe ^[9] . The idea was previously approved and accepted into the work, as it fell on fertile soil. At that time, the company's management was looking for new items to revitalize the broadcast, where classic family TV shows, such as Merry Company , prevailed, the time of which was approaching the last season ^[10] . David and Martha sat down for the pilot of the pilot series, the working title of the production changed to “Friends Like Us” (“Friends Like Us”). In March, the preliminary script for the pilot series was ready, and the name changed to Six of One.

In total, the producers spent about six months on character development ^[11] . The first candidate for the main role, without selection, was David Schwimmer. Actually the role of Ross Geller was written "for him." He had already established himself as a talented television and theater actor, and the creators of the series had no doubt that he would manage ^[13] .

All other actors were selected through multi-level selection. The process began in the first week of March 1994, even before the producers finished writing the script for the pilot episodes. For each of the five remaining positions of friends, the selection committee received over a thousand resumes . Of these, about 75 candidates were selected, who received a short text of approximately eight lines and were invited to read the role before the selection committee, which included Vice Presidents of Warner Brothers Munves and Miller. At the end of the month, no more than four candidates for the place, which have already been submitted to the NBC channel management, were included in the short list ^[11] . The final choice of performers Monica, Joey, Rachel, Phoebe and Chandler remained with them. The selection of actors for "Friends" by Crane and Kaufman was not the only project - at the same time there was a search for artists for another series that they prepared for the ABC channel ^[9] .

Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow could not be called newcomers. Their names were known only to specialists, although they already had experience and serious work ^[4] . Including Courtney Cox, whose status with a reservation could be called starry after " Family Ties " and the comedy " Ace Ventura: Search for Pets " ^{[8] [14]} .

In April 1994, the actors gathered for the first general reading of the script and revision. ^[15] . Even at the selection stage, the producers suggested Courtney Cox the role of Rachel, but Courtney herself decided that the character of Monica Geller is more suitable for her ^[7] .

Pilot Shooting

Filming of the pilot series, the moment of truth in the fate of the series ^[5] , took place in May 1994. The 8-hour material (4 cameras for 2 hours) was cut off during installation up to 22 min, and the commission of the NBC channel in the person of Don Olmeyer, head of the West Coast entertainment operation department, took over ^[5] .

The director of the pilot series (and subsequently 11 episodes of the first season) was James Burroughs , an experienced specialist who is known for his work in the series, in particular in the popular sitcom “The Jolly Company” and ( ). Filming of the first season of the series began in the 5th pavilion of Warner Broth. in Burbank ^[5] .

The series was filmed in front of an audience, which at the preliminary stages was given the script of the series, so that it was easier for them to perceive the plot ^[8] . Surveys among focus groups were immediately conducted in focus groups on topics that seemed controversial to NBC’s leadership ^[7] . So, for example, in the plot in the first episode, Monica breaks with a guy, right after she slept with him for the first time. A survey of viewers, however, showed that such behavior of the heroine does not seem to them “insulting” ^[16] .

When filming was in full swing, NBC executives unexpectedly suggested changing the themes of the dialogs, evaluating the first footage as boring. It was recommended that the heroes be made older, and the main meeting place should be moved from the cafe to the diner - that is, brought closer to the well-known Seinfeld series. Also, the producers were asked to adhere to the classic construction of the sitcom: in each episode there is one main storyline and several secondary ones. Crane and Kaufman, in contrast, adhered to a different scheme - three storylines of equal importance ^[5] . As a result of negotiations, the producers managed to defend their ideas in the main moments ^[7] .

The first show of the first episode took place on September 22, 1994. The very first episode did not fall short of expectations, noting the high performance of the audience rating, collecting an estimated 22 million viewers from the screens. The question of continuing filming the series was resolved ^[7] .

Work on the series

“Friends” from the first season took the place of the main series of the NBC television channel, at a key time - on Thursday evening. Already in 1995, following the results of the first season, the series Friends was nominated for an Emmy Award in 9 categories, collecting an average of 20 million viewers per episode ^[17] . Starting from the second season, the film crew moved to Pavilion No. 24, where the creative team worked until the tenth season ^[18] (now the pavilion bears the name of the series that was shot in it ^[19] ).

It was a busy period in the life of its creators. As Kevin Bright recalled, during this decade, 60–80 working hours per week were the usual schedule for him ^[20] . Having designed the basic idea and the pilot series, Crane and Kaufman handed over the development of the script to a specially hired group of young writers under the age of 40 years ^[21] . For the most part, the scriptwriters wrote the dialogues, but the actors also shared their ideas, which fell into the final version. At the beginning of each new season, the producers, together with the authors, worked out the most important moves, and then the producers carefully reviewed the work of the scriptwriters ^[22] . Initially, the authors planned that the romantic relationship between Joey and Monica would pass through the plot, later this idea was revised and replaced by the story of Ross and Rachel ^{[7] [17]} . Such important storylines directly influenced the popularity of the series and required close monitoring by the producers. For example, when at the end of the 7th season, the topic of relations between Chandler and Monica began to exhaust itself, reducing the rating, a plot twist related to Rachel’s pregnancy was immediately introduced ^[23] .

Usually, it took about 6-12 hours of time and 30 thousand feet of film directly to shoot one episode. The process could be delayed when alterations occurred due to changes in the plot that occurred at the last moment. Separate episodes were quite complicated in terms of staging and scenery. So, the episode “The One in Vegas” was actually completely shot in the studio, although the viewer might have the impression that the film crew was leaving for Las Vegas ^[20] . The footage was cut during installation up to about 22 minutes - the standard length of the series. Filming was conducted in front of an audience of 300 people ^[14] . However, a limited film crew worked on key episodes in which a serious plot twist occurred, and they were shot in an empty hall in order to maintain intrigue ^{[22] [24]} .

An important element of the work was the careful study of trifles. “Central Coffee House” is one of the few filming pavilions with a “street” made of real asphalt . This made it possible to achieve a more realistic sound in street scenes. The paintings hanging in Central Coffee House changed every 3 episodes. The art department hung there the work of local and foreign artists. Some artists created works specifically for the series ^[25] .

From the first season, a large number of invited stars appear in the series. " Episode after the Super Bowl " of the second season, became the champion among all episodes of the series. An audience of approximately 53 million viewers was gathered at the screens by an ensemble of guest stars of the first magnitude: Brooke Shields , Chris Isaac , Julia Roberts , Jean-Claude Van Damme , Fred Willard , Dan Castellaneta ^{[15] [26]} .

In fact, the composition of those actors who became permanent heroes was determined in the first season. After the first episode, there was only one significant replacement - the performer of the role of Carol, the former wife of Ross, Anita Barron did not arrange the producers for her game, and she, until the end, was replaced by Jane Sibbett.

In 1998, the creative team went on a business trip to London , where episodes of the fourth season were to be filmed. As the authors noted, in their memory this is a unique case when the crew of an American series would fly abroad ^[20] . One reason was a tribute to the large army of fans in the UK ^[13] , where Channel 4 broadcast the series’s premieres. “Friends” and “ Ambulance ” have become one of the most popular NBC TV shows in the UK ^[27] .

Performers of the main characters of the series behaved on the principle of "one for all and all for one." As it happens in a good team - "the amount turned out to be more than each individual part." Observers noted that in the course of work on the series, six stars within the collective had never noted friction or serious disagreements ^[24] . Cohesion helped in difficult moments of discussions with the leadership of the channel, when it came to the strike. There are known examples when the bosses of the largest US studios behaved mercilessly with the stars who tried to dictate their conditions to them ^[28] . In this case, the solidarity of the six led to a positive outcome for them. The status of all the leading actors has risen to the highest levels in the Hollywood rankings. After the 8th season, fans of the series began to note that the show began to lose its brilliance, the quality of the dialogs deteriorated somewhat and the main storylines exhausted themselves ^[33] . In the film crew, disagreements began to arise more and more between actors and management . The new show, “ Survivor, ” replaced “Friends” from the top spot in their time slot ratings. Information began to penetrate the media that this or the next season would be the last ^[14] .

By that time, all the leading actors were already in high demand in classical cinema, and their career did not depend on the continuation of the series. Due to the fact that they were involved in various projects of their own, in the last season 18 episodes were shot instead of 24 ^[34] . Сериал «Сайнфелд», ставший важной вехой в истории телевидения, открыл новый жанр ситкома. В нём также была раскрыта тема дружбы и сложных взаимоотношений внутри группы молодых людей, ищущих себя в этой жизни. Семейные отношения и работа уходят на второй план — на переднем плане лёгкие юмористические диалоги, в духе «перебрасывания мяча» (fastball dialogue). Финансовая сторона проекта

Вскоре после окончания показа «Друзей» на экраны вышел телесериал « Джоуи » ( англ. Joey ). Его премьера состоялась на канале NBC 9 сентября 2004 года .
