Biography

Vladimir Smirnov was one of the best fencers in the world in the late 1970s - early 1980s. His specialty was rapier , but he also participated in the competition of fencers .

From the age of 10 he began to play sports in the city of Rubezhnoye , and later in Kiev SKA (coach - V. Kh. Bykov [2] ). In 1977-1979 he became the champion of the USSR, in 1979 he became the first at the Spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR .

In 1978, he won the bronze medal in the world championship in the championship of teams in the international arena, and in 1979 and 1981 he took first places in the team championship. In 1980, at the World Fencing Championships, he became the first in the individual championship among foil fencers.

At the Olympics in Moscow, he won three medals: gold in the individual foil championship, silver in the foil team championship and bronze in the epee fencing team. Smirnov’s victory in the foil tournament was only the second in the history of Soviet fencing - at the 1960 Olympics, victory in this discipline was won by Viktor Zhdanovich . After 1980, none of the domestic foil fencers managed to win the individual championship in the Olympic Games.

He also became the owner of the 1980 and 1981 World Cup.

July 20 [3] 1982, at the World Fencing Championships in a duel with Matthias Bör from Germany , the opponent broke a rapier , a fragment of which pierced Smirnov’s mask and injured his brain through his eye . [4] After spending 8 days in an artificial coma, Vladimir Smirnov died in a hospital. He was buried at the Lukyanovsky military cemetery in Kiev (Ukraine).

This incident entailed a change in the equipment of athletes in order to increase safety. The requirements for deflection of the blade or the load on the tip of the rapier or sword have also changed.
